1 Overview
The Helldusk Armor is widely regarded as the best heavy armor in Baldur's Gate 3 — and for good reason. With a staggering 21 base AC, resistance to fire damage, the ability to cast Fly without concentration, and a suite of additional defensive passive abilities, this piece of legendary equipment fundamentally changes how your frontline character performs in combat. This is not merely armor; it is a statement of infernal supremacy forged in the fires of the Hells themselves.
This armor is worn by Raphael, the Cambion archdevil who serves as one of the primary antagonists throughout your journey in Baldur's Gate 3. It cannot be crafted, it cannot be purchased from merchants, and it will not be handed to you as a quest reward. To obtain the Helldusk Armor, you must either steal it from the House of Hope — one of the most elaborate and challenging heist sequences in the entire game — or defeat Raphael in combat, which is one of the hardest boss encounters in Act 3. Both methods require meticulous preparation, careful navigation of devilish contracts, and a thorough understanding of the House of Hope's layout and inhabitants.
The Helldusk Armor grants the wearer the Helldusk set bonuses when combined with other Helldusk gear pieces — the Helldusk Gloves, Helldusk Boots, and Helldusk Helmet — each of which is also obtained within the House of Hope. Collecting the full set transforms your character into an unstoppable juggernaut of infernal might, making the heist or boss fight well worth the effort for any player running a heavy armor build, particularly Fighters, Paladins, or Barbarians who can capitalize on the massive AC boost and fire resistance.

2 Acquisition Method
There are two primary methods to acquire the Helldusk Armor, and both take place within the House of Hope in Act 3. The House of Hope is a vast extraplanar estate that serves as Raphael's personal domain — a twisted palace of devilish excess, impossible architecture, and infernal contracts. You will first be introduced to this location through the main quest line involving the Crown of Karsus and Raphael's offer to help you defeat the Absolute.
Method A: The Heist — Stealing the Armor
The stealth route involves infiltrating the House of Hope, navigating its hazards without alerting Raphael, and stealing the armor from his personal chambers. This method is complex, multi-staged, and requires careful planning, but it allows you to obtain the armor without fighting one of the game's most difficult bosses. During this heist, you will also have the opportunity to free Hope — an imprisoned celestial being trapped within Raphael's domain — which is a deeply rewarding narrative choice that unlocks a powerful ally for the final confrontation with Raphael if you choose to fight him later.
Method B: Kill Raphael — Loot the Armor
The combat route is straightforward in concept but brutally difficult in execution. Raphael is a CR 18+ encounter with devastating fire-based attacks, summons allied devils, and can cast powerful spells including Wall of Fire and Hellish Rebuke. Defeating him in the House of Hope allows you to loot the Helldusk Armor directly from his corpse, along with the rest of the Helldusk set and other valuable items. If you freed Hope during the heist, she will assist you in this fight, making it significantly more manageable. Without her help, this is widely considered one of the toughest optional fights in the game.
Method C: The "Deal with the Devil" Approach
There is technically a third approach: you can accept Raphael's deal to help you defeat the Absolute, which involves signing an infernal contract. However, this path does NOT yield the Helldusk Armor directly — it merely unlocks access to the House of Hope as a visitable location. Even if you sign the contract, you will still need to either steal the armor or kill Raphael to actually obtain it. Many players choose to sign the contract purely to gain entry, then betray Raphael afterward by stealing everything and/or killing him — a fittingly devilish double-cross.

4 Step-by-Step Route
Below is the complete heist route for obtaining the Helldusk Armor without fighting Raphael. This is the recommended method for most players as it yields the armor AND frees Hope, setting up an easier boss fight later.
→ Speak with Raphael in the upper floor private room
→ Accept or negotiate the Infernal Contract
→ Receive the House of Hope Invitation
Step 2: Travel to the Lower City Docks (X:80, Y:-110)
→ Locate the hidden extraplanar portal
→ Pass Arcana check (DC 15) to activate, or use invitation
→ Enter the House of Hope
Step 3: House of Hope — Entry Hall
→ You are greeted by Haarlep, Raphael's incubus/succubus attendant
→ Dialogue choice: "I'm here for business" — proceed without suspicion
→ Avoid mentioning theft or the armor
Step 4: Explore the Ground Floor
→ Locate the Archives — eastern wing of the ground floor
→ Speak with the Archivist (a bound devil)
→ Persuasion check (DC 18): Convince him to reveal Raphael's vault location
→ Alternative: Steal the Archivist's Key from his desk (Sleight of Hand DC 15)
Step 5: Find the Vault Key Clue
→ Read the documents in the Archives for vault information
→ Discover that the Boudoir holds a secret entrance to the vault
→ Learn that Haarlep carries one of the vault keys
Step 6: Upper Floor — The Boudoir
→ Navigate to the upper floor (use stairs in main hall)
→ Locate the Boudoir — Raphael's private chambers
→ Guarded by arcane locks — DC 20 Arcana check to bypass, or use Archivist's Key
Step 7: Enter the Boudoir
→ Inside the Boudoir, search the vanity and wardrobe areas
→ Find Haarlep's Key — opens the vault antechamber
→ Stealth check: Avoid alerting patrolling Imps (Perception 16)
Step 8: The Vault — Helldusk Armor Location
→ From the Boudoir, locate the hidden passage behind the painting
→ Enter the Helldusk Vault
→ The Helldusk Armor is displayed on an armor stand in the center
→ LOOT: Helldusk Armor (Legendary Heavy Armor, 21 AC)
Step 9: Free Hope (Optional but Recommended)
→ From the vault, locate Hope's prison — The Cage in the lower basement
→ Use the Warden's Key (found on the Warden's body in the servant quarters)
→ Speak with Hope and choose: "I'll get you out of here"
→ Escort Hope to the exit portal — she becomes an ally
Step 10: Escape the House of Hope
→ Return to the entry hall portal without being detected
→ If Hope is with you, she cloaks your escape
→ Exit to the Lower City — Helldusk Armor secured!
Combat Alternative: Killing Raphael
→ Instead of stealth, openly confront the guards
→ Fight through to the main ballroom where Raphael resides
Combat Step 2: Raphael Boss Fight
→ Raphael spawns with 2 Helldusk Cultists and 4 Imps
→ At 60% HP, he summons a Pit Fiend ally
→ Focus fire on cultists first, then imps
→ Use cold damage — Raphael has fire immunity but no cold resistance
Combat Step 3: Loot the Corpse
→ LOOT: Helldusk Armor + Helldusk Gloves + Helldusk Boots + Helldusk Helmet + Infernal Rapier + 5000+ Gold
5 Gotcha Tips
You cannot pickpocket the Helldusk Armor from Raphael directly. It is flagged as a "quest item" in his inventory and cannot be stolen through Sleight of Hand. You MUST either steal it from the vault or loot it from his corpse after killing him.
Equipping the Helldusk Armor without Heavy Armor Proficiency imposes disadvantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws that use Strength or Dexterity. Only Fighters, Paladins, Clerics (some domains), and characters with the Heavily Armored feat can wear it without penalty.
If Raphael becomes aware of your presence in the House of Hope before you reach the vault, the entire estate goes on high alert. All doors lock, patrols double, and Raphael teleports to confront you. Use a Quick Save before every major section of the heist. The game does not autosave inside the House of Hope.
Haarlep, the incubus attendant, can psychically sense intruders if you get too close. Maintain a distance of at least 15 meters, or use Pass Without Trace / Invisibility to avoid detection. If Haarlep spots you, he will alert Raphael immediately.
If you kill Raphael before freeing Hope, she remains trapped forever. This locks you out of a powerful ally for the final battle AND misses significant narrative content. Always free Hope before fighting Raphael, even if you plan to fight him during the same visit.
If you sign Raphael's Infernal Contract, you gain a permanent debuff called "Infernal Mark" that reduces your maximum HP by 10 until you either kill Raphael or complete a specific ritual to break the contract. This debuff persists across long rests and cannot be removed by normal means.
The Helldusk Vault contains pressure plate traps that trigger Fireball spells (DC 18 Dexterity save for half damage). A character with high Perception (16+) and Thieves' Tools can disarm them. Failing the saves deals 8d6 fire damage — enough to kill squishy characters instantly.
Raphael has immunity to fire damage and resistance to necrotic. His only non-resisted damage types are cold, lightning, psychic, radiant, and force. Prepare cold-damage spells like Cone of Cold or equip cold-enchanted weapons before the fight. Characters with the Elemental Adept (Cold) feat excel here.

Narrative Benefits
Freeing Hope triggers a unique dialogue tree in the game's ending sequence and provides additional context for Raphael's motivations. The House of Hope also contains lore books and documents that reveal critical backstory about the Crown of Karsus, the Absolute, and the Blood War between devils and demons.
