Preserving Boluses

Cures and Prevents Scarlet Rot — Essential Survival Tool for Underground Dungeons and Lake of Rot
★★★★☆ Hard Type: Bolus (Remedy) Stack: 99

🛡️ Why Preserving Boluses Matter

Scarlet Rot is one of the most lethal status effects in Elden Ring. Once the meter fills, it drains your health at a devastating rate — far faster than poison and with equally punishing persistence. Unlike poison, which you might be able to outheal with regen, scarlet rot demands immediate attention. Without a cure, you are watching your health bar melt while frantically rolling away from enemies. Preserving Boluses are the ultimate answer to this nightmare — they not only cure scarlet rot instantly but also prevent it from building up for a generous duration afterward.

Across the Lands Between, numerous zones are saturated with scarlet rot hazards. From the rotting swamps of Caelid to the infamous Lake of Rot deep underground, to countless rot-themed dungeons — without Preserving Boluses, these areas border on unnavigable. Even max-level characters must respect scarlet rot because its damage scales as a percentage of maximum HP, not a flat number. Whether you have 20 Vigor or 60, the rot will chew through your health bar with terrifying efficiency.

When to Use Preserving Boluses

  • Lake of Rot Exploration: The most notorious scarlet rot zone in the game. Walking through the knee-deep filth without protection is essentially a death sentence. Preserving Boluses let you traverse it with confidence.
  • Caelid Swamp Traversal: The southern swamps of Caelid are filled with scarlet rot buildup and dangerous enemies. Boluses let you focus on combat instead of panicking about your health bar.
  • Anti-Rot Boss Battles: Against bosses like Malenia, Blade of Miquella, whose attacks inflict scarlet rot, having boluses ready can mean the difference between victory and watching your HP disappear mid-fight.
  • Catacomb and Tunnel Runs: Many underground dungeons feature rot traps, rot pools, and rot-infused enemies. Keep a stack on hand for any subterranean expedition.
  • Preventive Application: Consuming a bolus before entering a rot zone grants temporary immunity, preventing the meter from building at all. This is the pro move — cure before you need to cure.

Understanding Scarlet Rot Mechanics

Scarlet rot's damage mechanics are brutal. Once fully inflicted, it drains approximately 1% max HP + a flat value per second, lasting roughly 3 minutes. A character with 40 Vigor (~1500 HP) will lose well over a thousand health over the duration. Furthermore, scarlet rot stacks with other status effects — you can be bleeding, poisoned, and rotting simultaneously, creating a symphony of health drain that no flask can outpace. The only solutions are: Preserving Boluses, the Flame, Cleanse Me incantation (requires 12 Faith), or theImmutable Shield skill (extremely niche). Of these, Preserving Boluses are the most universally accessible.

Comparison with Other Scarlet Rot Cures

  • vs. Flame, Cleanse Me (Incantation): Requires 12 Faith and a memory slot. Preserving Boluses require zero stat investment — any build can use them.
  • vs. Immunizing Cured Meat: Only raises immunity resistance — it slows buildup but does not cure active rot. Preserving Boluses do both: cure active rot AND prevent future buildup.
  • vs. Raw Healing (Flask Spam): Viable against minor rot exposure, but impossible in heavy rot zones like the Lake of Rot where the buildup speed outpaces any healing.
  • vs. Avoidance: Often not an option. Many rot zones are on critical paths to key items, bosses, or questlines.

The FOMO Factor

The Lake of Rot is a gateway to Crumbling Farum Azula and several critical questlines, including key portions of Ranni's quest. Without Preserving Boluses, you can be stuck for hours, forced to backtrack and farm materials while your quest progress stalls. Worse yet, the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [18] in Siofra River Well is easy to miss — many first-playthrough players have no idea it exists. Imagine reaching the pivotal moment in Ranni's questline, only to be stopped dead by a lake of flesh-eating sludge because you lack the recipe for the one item that trivializes it. The FOMO is real, and the fix is straightforward: venture into the well, grab the cookbook, and never fear the rot again.

🧪 Crafting Recipe

The Preserving Boluses recipe requires three distinct materials — each representing a different type of farming challenge. Cave moss from subterranean grottos, riverside herbs from waterways, and Sacramental Bud from dangerous zones.

MaterialQuantityRarityFarmable
🌿 Crystal Cave Moss 1x Medium (Cave-Specific) ✅ Yes — Crystal cave nodes
🌸 Dewkissed Herba 1x Low (Common Near Water) ✅ Yes — River/lake shores
🌺 Sacramental Bud 1x Rare (Danger Zones) ✅ Yes — Limited spawns

Yield

Each crafting attempt produces 1x Preserving Boluses. The stack limit is 99. Recommended stockpile: 20–30 for rot-zone exploration and boss encounters. If you are planning a Lake of Rot expedition, bring at least 10–15.

⚠️ Recipe Key Notes

  • Cures active scarlet rot instantly — the meter drops to zero the moment you consume it.
  • Grants temporary immunity after consumption — the rot meter will not build during this window.
  • Immunity duration is approximately 3–4 minutes — enough for most rot-zone traversal.
  • Stack limit of 99 means you can craft in bulk without inventory pressure.
  • Stacks with immunity-boosting talismans like Immunizing Horn Charm for extended rot-zone exploration.

📖 Required Cookbook: Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [18]

To unlock the Preserving Boluses recipe, you must acquire Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [18]. This Cookbook is located in the Siofra River Well — a massive underground river zone filled with unique enemies, ancient architecture, and its own mini-boss encounters.

📖 Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [18]

Location: Siofra River Well, underground zone

Coordinates: On a corpse near the main elevator shaft area, close to where the Siofra River Bank grace is located

Also Unlocks: Additional bolus and utility crafting recipes

How to Reach Siofra River Well

The Siofra River Well is a vast underground zone located beneath eastern Limgrave. To access it, find the Siofra River Well Depths entrance well in the Mistwood area of Limgrave. A massive elevator platform descends into the underground world, opening into a cavernous river basin unlike anything on the surface.

Step 1: Start from the Third Church of Marika in east Limgrave, or the Fort Haight West grace.

Step 2: Head southeast into Mistwood. Look for a large ruined structure with a well entrance — this is the Siofra River Well Depths lift.

Step 3: Activate the lift and ride the massive elevator all the way down. This takes approximately 30 seconds — one of the longest elevator rides in the game.

Step 4: At the bottom, follow the tunnel forward until you emerge into the vast underground river cavern. The Siofra River Bank Site of Grace is directly ahead.

Step 5: From the Siofra River Bank grace, explore the surrounding area. The Cookbook is on a corpse near the central support pillar and elevator shaft structures — look for glowing white items on bodies near the main architecture.

Siofra River Well Hazards

  • Ancestral Follower spirits: Ghostly warriors in ancient armor with strong attacks and solid HP pools. They respawn like normal enemies.
  • Giant horned deer: Massive creatures with devastating charge attacks. They are surprisingly fast for their size.
  • Floating flame pots: Hovering enemies that explode when approached. Deal significant fire damage.
  • Spiritflame braziers: Must be lit by shooting them with flame arrows or spells to dispel certain spirit enemies in the area.
  • No boss required: The Cookbook is in an open area — no boss kill needed, though the area's enemies are dangerous enough.
  • Fall hazards: The underground river has many cliffs and drops. Watch your step near the water's edge.

Why Explore Siofra River Well Beyond the Cookbook

Siofra River Well is far more than just a cookbook pickup. The zone also contains: the Ancestor Spirit boss fight — one of the most visually stunning and unique encounters in the game, rewarding a powerful Spirit Ash summon; abundant Smithing Stones and Grave Gloveworts for weapon and spirit upgrades; connections to other underground zones; and an atmosphere that exemplifies Elden Ring's subterranean world design. Even if you come only for the Preserving Boluses recipe, take time to explore — this is one of the most memorable areas in the game.

🌿 Materials & Farm Locations

Preserving Boluses require three materials from three completely different environments: dark crystalline caves, moist riverbanks, and dangerous high-level zones. Farming for these materials is itself a journey across the Lands Between.

🌿 Material 1: Crystal Cave Moss

🌿

Crystal Cave Moss ★★ Medium — Cave Exclusive

Crystal Cave Moss is a pale blue-white moss that grows exclusively in caves where crystals form. Its distinctive coloration makes it relatively easy to spot against dark cave walls, but you must deliberately seek out subterranean crystal grottos to farm it.

Best Crystal Cave Moss Farm Locations

🥇 #1: Academy Crystal Cave — Liurnia

Academy Crystal Cave in northern Liurnia is the best farm. Crystal pillars and clusters throughout the cave have 2–4 moss nodes each per sweep. From the cave's grace, a full circuit yields 3–5 moss. Rest and repeat. This cave is also a good source of Smithing Stones.

🥈 #2: Sellia Crystal Tunnel — Caelid

Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid has higher moss density — 5–7 per run — but stronger enemies. Be cautious of the Fallingstar Beast at the tunnel's depths; avoid the boss chamber unless you are prepared for that fight.

🥉 #3: Any Crystal Cave in the Mountaintops

Various crystal caves in the Mountaintops of the Giants also contain Crystal Cave Moss, often alongside high-tier Smithing Stones.

Crystal Cave Moss Farming Tips

  • While farming Academy Crystal Cave, also grab Smithing Stone [2] and [3] from the mining spots.
  • Moss respawns on grace rest — infinitely farmable.
  • Crystal cave miners drop Smithing Stones — dual-purpose farming.
  • Use AoE attacks to clear groups of crystal snails efficiently.

🌸 Material 2: Dewkissed Herba

🌸

Dewkissed Herba ★ Common — Water Edge

Dewkissed Herba is a common herb found along riverbanks, lake shores, and swamp edges throughout the Lands Between. Its small white flowers are easy to spot near water and it is by far the easiest of the three materials to acquire.

Best Dewkissed Herba Farm Locations

🥇 #1: Liurnia of the Lakes — Every Shoreline

Liurnia of the Lakes is Dewkissed Herba paradise. Starting from the Liurnia Lakeshore grace, ride along the shoreline and collect 10–15 per circuit. The entire region's waterways are covered in this herb. It is so abundant that you will likely pick up hundreds just from normal exploration.

🥈 #2: Stormveil Castle — Moat Area

The moat area around Stormveil Castle also has Dewkissed Herba for early-game farming. Lower quantity than Liurnia but conveniently close.

Dewkissed Herba Farming Tips

  • Mount up on Torrent for maximum collection speed along shorelines.
  • Liurnia circuits yield so many you typically do not need dedicated farming — just grab them while passing through.
  • Used in multiple other recipes — there is no such thing as too many.

🌺 Material 3: Sacramental Bud

🌺

Sacramental Bud ★★★ Rare — Dangerous Zones

Sacramental Bud is the rarest component of the Preserving Boluses recipe. This dark crimson bud only spawns in specific dangerous zones — primarily around Caelid's Divine Tower and surrounding areas, plus certain catacombs. It is the bottleneck material for bulk crafting.

Best Sacramental Bud Farm Locations

🥇 #1: Caelid Divine Tower — Exterior

Caelid Divine Tower exterior is the best farm. The grounds around the tower have 2–4 spawn points. From the Divine Tower of Caelid: Basement grace, ride the lift or drop down nearby, then collect the buds scattered around the tower's base ruins. Be cautious — Caelid's wildlife is aggressive and high-level.

🥈 #2: Sellia, Town of Sorcery — Caelid

Sellia, Town of Sorcery has several Sacramental Bud spawns. You must light three flame braziers to unseal the town before freely moving about. The invisible assassins are deadly — use Torrent for hit-and-run collection.

🥉 #3: Various Catacombs in Caelid

Various catacombs throughout Caelid have Sacramental Bud nodes, but quantities are low and require clearing enemies.

Sacramental Bud Farming Tips

  • Respawns on grace rest — infinitely farmable, but limited spawn points per zone.
  • Caelid enemies are high-level — recommend level 40+ for comfortable farming.
  • Equip items that boost Discovery (Arcane-boosting gear, Silver Scarab Talisman).
  • While in Caelid, also collect Bloodrose — the zone produces both materials.

⚠️ Gotcha Tips — What Can Go Wrong

Preserving Boluses are powerful but come with numerous pitfalls in acquisition and usage. Here is the complete warning list.

🌊 Gotcha 1: Siofra River Well Is Easy to Miss

Many first-playthrough players have no idea Siofra River Well exists. The entrance well is in a ruin in Mistwood with no obvious signage. If you do not deliberately explore eastern Limgrave's forest, you will miss the entire underground zone and Cookbook [18]. Proactively seek out well entrances in every zone — they are gateways to hidden content.

🌺 Gotcha 2: Sacramental Bud Is the Bottleneck

Sacramental Bud is the true bottleneck. Crystal Cave Moss and Dewkissed Herba are easy to stockpile, but Sacramental Bud's limited spawn points in dangerous Caelid cap your production rate. Your boluses output is limited by how much Sacramental Bud you can farm. Plan accordingly — farm Sacramental Bud first, then grab the other two materials in bulk.

🏊 Gotcha 3: Lake of Rot Still Hurts — Boluses Do Not Make You Invincible

The immunity window is powerful but not infinite. Lake of Rot's buildup is extremely aggressive, and the immunity duration is finite. Standing in the center too long will overwhelm even bolus protection. Combine with Immunizing Horn Charm and high-immunity armor, and plan your route to minimize time in the sludge.

📖 Gotcha 4: The Cookbook Is Not on the Main Path

Cookbook [18] is in Siofra River Well's open area but not on the main exploration path. It is near the central pillars and lift structures, on a corpse. Many players explore Siofra River Well but miss this cookbook because it is not on the route to the Ancestor Spirit or major areas. Search thoroughly around the central architecture.

⏱️ Gotcha 5: The Immunity Timer Is Easy to Forget

The 3–4 minute immunity window is easy to lose track of during tense exploration. When the buff expires, the rot meter starts building from zero — giving you a brief grace period, but not much. Set a mental timer when entering rot zones, or keep an eye on your status bar for the immunity icon disappearing.

🧪 Gotcha 6: Do Not Confuse with Other Boluses

Elden Ring has multiple bolus types: Preserving (scarlet rot), Stanching (bleed), Thawing (frostbite), and Sleep (sleep). In the heat of combat, it is easy to pop the wrong one. Keep only the bolus type you currently need on your quick bar to avoid tragic mistakes.

🎁 Free Benefits — What Else You Get Farming These Materials

The farming routes for Preserving Boluses double as a comprehensive tour of the Lands Between. Here is what else you will collect:

Exploring Siofra River Well (Cookbook Location)

  • Ancestor Spirit Boss: Defeat this majestic boss for the Ancestral Follower's Ashes — a powerful ranged Spirit Ash summon.
  • Smithing Stones & Grave Gloveworts: Key materials for weapon and Spirit Ash upgrades.
  • Golden Seeds: Multiple seeds to upgrade your Flask charges.
  • Path to Nokron: Siofra River Well connects to the Eternal City Nokron, essential for Ranni's questline and other major content.

Farming Crystal Caves (Crystal Cave Moss)

  • Smithing Stones [2] & [3]: Academy Crystal Cave is rich in mid-tier upgrade stones.
  • Somber Smithing Stones: Certain crystal caves contain rare special weapon upgrade stones.
  • Miner's Bell Bearings: Crystal cave bosses drop bell bearings for purchasing Smithing Stones from the Twin Maiden Husks.

Farming Caelid (Sacramental Bud)

  • Bloodrose: Caelid also produces Bloodrose for bleed-themed crafting.
  • Runes: Caelid enemies give substantial runes for early leveling.
  • Unique Gear: Caelid has many unique weapons and armor pieces to discover.
  • Sellia Town Treasures: Lighting the three braziers unlocks multiple sorcery scrolls and equipment pieces.

Long-Term Strategic Value

Mastering Preserving Boluses means you have conquered Siofra River Well and penetrated the heart of Caelid. That alone marks significant mid-game progression. More importantly, you have acquired a tool that counters the game's most feared status effect — enabling you to explore any rot zone with confidence, no longer shackled by scarlet rot anxiety.

At a deeper level, farming Preserving Boluses material embodies Elden Ring's core design: different regions yield different resources, and you must travel the world to gather them. This is not a game where you farm everything in one spot — it encourages exploration of every corner, every environment. When you traverse caves, lakes, and wastelands for three different materials, you are experiencing the game's central appeal.
