Deviljho Greatsword
① Overview
The Deviljho Greatsword represents the absolute pinnacle of raw damage output in Monster Hunter Wilds. Forged from the parts of the fearsome World Eater himself, this colossal blade boasts the highest raw attack value of any greatsword in the game — a stat line that makes even endgame meta builds take notice.
However, this power comes at a cost: the weapon carries significant negative affinity (-30%), meaning nearly one in three hits will deal reduced damage. Skilled hunters offset this with the Critical Eye skill and the True Charge Slash's built-in affinity boost, turning this drawback into a manageable quirk. Wielding the Deviljho Greatsword is as much a badge of honor as it is a weapon — proof that you have slain the apex predator of the New World.

③ Materials
Deviljho Scale ×10
Thick, dark scales harvested from the World Eater's hide. These form the foundation of the greatsword's massive blade. At 30% carve rate with 3 carves per kill, expect 4-5 hunts to accumulate enough scales.
Body carves — 30% rate, 3 per huntDeviljho Talon ×4
Razor-sharp claws obtained by breaking Deviljho's powerful hind legs. These wicked talons form the crossguard of the greatsword. Focus your attacks on the legs when Deviljho enters rage mode — they become more vulnerable.
Break legs — 25% rateDeviljho Tallfang ×2
Oversized fangs broken from Deviljho's massive jaws. The most straightforward material to acquire at 50% head-break rate. The fangs serve as decorative but intimidating elements along the blade's spine.
Break head — 50% rate (highest!)Deviljho Gem ×1
The legendary gem formed within Deviljho's body over decades of devouring prey. At a brutal 2% carve rate, this is one of the rarest materials in the entire game. Investigations with gold reward boxes are your best hope.
★★ Ultra Rare — 2% carve rateDeviljho Tail ×2
The thick, muscular tail severed from the beast's rear. Surprisingly manageable at 60% sever rate. Use a cutting weapon and target the tail when Deviljho performs its stomp attacks — the tail droops low to the ground.
Tail sever — 60% rateMonster Hardbone ×6
Dense bone material from apex-tier monsters. Used to reinforce the greatsword's massive structure. Deviljho itself drops these, making it a convenient secondary farm during your main hunts.
Various carves — 15% rateDragonvein Crystal ×4
Crystallized dragon energy found in rare mining outcrops. These channel the latent draconic essence throughout the blade. Found in the Elder's Recess and Rotten Vale mining zones.
Mining outcrops — 25% rate④ Optimal Route
Locate Deviljho — The Invading Apex
Deviljho is an invasion monster that appears randomly during High Rank expeditions and quests, or through special event assignments. Look for the "???" monster warning on your map, or follow the monster tracks (gigantic footprints, destroyed terrain) to track it. Some investigations guarantee Deviljho spawns — prioritize these.
Lure or Track — Patience is Required
Carry Raw Meat as bait — Deviljho will stop to eat when fatigued, creating massive attack windows. Alternatively, equip the Scholar skill to speed up investigation progress from tracks. Scoutflies turn green when tracking an invasion monster.
Priority Target — Break Head & Legs
Focus on the head first for Tallfangs (50% break rate) — this also reduces the bite attack hitbox. Then break the legs for Talons (25%) which will cause Deviljho to stumble frequently. Avoid the front when enraged; its dragon breath has enormous range.
The Gem Grind — 2% Hell
With a 2% carve rate, the Deviljho Gem is statistically the hardest material in this build. Run investigations with 2+ gold reward boxes to bypass carve RNG entirely. On average, expect 20-30 hunts without gold box luck. The Gem can also appear in the Elder Melder's pot — save your steel/gold wyverian prints.
Forging — The Apex Blade
Once all 29 materials are secured, visit the smithy. The Deviljho Greatsword branches from the Buster Blade tree. Total forging cost: 54,000z. Augment slots: 1. The resulting weapon's raw attack of 1,100 makes every hunt worth it.
⑤ Gotcha Tips
🌪️ Deviljho is an Unstable Invasion Monster
Unlike standard monsters, Deviljho cannot be reliably farmed through standard quest selection. It appears randomly during expeditions and certain quests. Save scumming investigations or joining SOS flares are often faster than waiting for natural spawns.
🎲 Gem 2% — The Ultimate RNG Gate
The Deviljho Gem's 2% carve rate means you could theoretically go 50+ hunts without seeing one. Always check investigation reward boxes — silver and gold boxes have independent Gem drop chances that stack with carves. Use the Elder Melder as a last resort with wyverian prints.
➖ Negative Affinity Requires Skill Investment
At -30% affinity, roughly 1 in 3 hits deals 25% less damage. You must slot in Critical Eye (ideally level 7 for +30%) or Weakness Exploit to bring effective affinity into positive territory. Without these skills, the "highest raw damage" becomes mediocre real damage.
⚔️ Extreme Attack Power = Frequent Bouncing
The greatsword's raw power is so high that even slightly hardened monster parts will cause your attacks to bounce. Always aim for wounded weak points or bring Mind's Eye (bypasses bouncing). Nothing is more frustrating than a charged True Charge Slash bouncing off a monster's leg.
🐲 Dragonbreath Has Massive Range
Deviljjo's dragon element breath attack covers a deceptively wide cone and inflicts Dragonblight (nullifies your weapon's element). The tell is a brief head rear-back — dodge sideways, not backward. Bring Nulberries and consider Dragon Resistance decorations for comfort.
⑥ Free Benefits
🦴 Premium Bone Drops
Deviljho consistently drops Monster Hardbone and Monster Keenbone in large quantities. These are used across dozens of other weapon and armor crafts. Your Deviljho grind will likely stockpile enough bones to skip farming for multiple other gear pieces.
📋 Bonus Investigation Points
Invasion hunts award substantially more research points than standard quests. The ecological data from Deviljho encounters also progresses your monster research level rapidly, unlocking more valuable investigations and wider scoutfly ranges.
🛡️ Mastering Aggressive Large Monsters
Deviljho is arguably the best training dummy for learning to fight large, highly aggressive monsters. Its telegraphed but punishing attacks teach dodge timing, positioning, and stamina management. Skills developed here transfer directly to endgame Elder Dragon fights.
💎 Dragonvein Crystal Mining
Tracking Deviljho through the Elder's Recess and Rotten Vale leads you past numerous Dragonvein Crystal mining nodes. These crystals are needed for many late-game weapon augments and armor upgrades, making the search route a productive gathering run.
