1 Why This Recipe Matters
The Diluted Fuel alternate recipe is arguably the most transformative recipe for late-game power generation in Satisfactory. It represents the culmination of oil processing technology — a sophisticated refinement process that converts Heavy Oil Residue and Water into Fuel at a rate that defies conventional production economics. When fully set up with the Packaged Heavy Oil Residue loop, this recipe can increase your Fuel output by up to 500% compared to standard Oil processing, enabling power plants of a scale that would be impossible otherwise.
Production Efficiency Gain
To understand why Diluted Fuel is so powerful, we need to look at the complete oil processing chain. Crude Oil enters a Refinery and is processed into multiple outputs: Fuel, Plastic, Rubber, and Heavy Oil Residue (from certain recipes). In standard processing, Heavy Oil Residue is often treated as a byproduct that needs to be sunk or converted to Petroleum Coke. Diluted Fuel flips this paradigm — it turns Heavy Oil Residue, formerly a waste product, into your primary Fuel production input.
The numbers are staggering. The Diluted Fuel recipe takes 50 Heavy Oil Residue and 100 Water per minute and produces 100 Fuel per minute. The standard Fuel recipe produces only 40 Fuel from 60 Crude Oil. If you first convert Crude Oil to Heavy Oil Residue (via the Heavy Oil Residue alternate recipe at the Refinery, which gives 40 Heavy Oil Residue from 30 Crude Oil), then feed that into Diluted Fuel, your effective conversion becomes: 30 Crude Oil → 40 Heavy Oil Residue → 80 Fuel. Compare that to the standard recipe's 60 Crude Oil → 40 Fuel. You're getting double the fuel from half the oil — a 4x efficiency multiplier.
When to Unlock
Diluted Fuel becomes available at Tier 7, which is when you unlock the Blender building. This is deep into the late game — you've likely already built substantial oil infrastructure, probably have nuclear power or are considering it, and are looking to scale your factory to massive proportions. Tier 7 requires significant investment in earlier tiers and represents the transition from 'large factory' to 'industrial empire.'
The timing is deliberate: by Tier 7, your Fuel demands have exploded. You're running dozens of Fuel Generators for power, producing massive quantities of Plastic and Rubber for advanced components, and possibly setting up Turbo Fuel production for vehicles and the Jetpack. Diluted Fuel arrives exactly when you need it most, providing the production boost to meet these enormous demands without requiring five times as many Oil nodes.

Production Tree (Optimal Setup)
Crude Oil (30/min) → Refinery (Heavy Oil Residue recipe)
→ 40 Heavy Oil Residue/min + 20 Plastic byproduct
40 Heavy Oil Residue + 80 Water → Blender (Diluted Fuel)
→ 80 Fuel/min 🔥
[SCALING: 400 FUEL/MIN POWER PLANT]
Crude Oil (150/min from Pure Node) → 5x Refinery (HOR)
→ 200 Heavy Oil Residue/min + 100 Plastic byproduct
200 HOR + 400 Water → 5x Blender (Diluted Fuel)
→ 400 Fuel/min = 20,000 MW potential
The Packaged Heavy Oil Residue Loop
The most advanced Diluted Fuel setups use the Packaged Heavy Oil Residue alternate recipe to create a fully closed loop. Here's how it works: Heavy Oil Residue is packaged at a Refinery (using Empty Canisters produced on-site from Plastic), transported via conveyor belts to the Blender location, unpackaged back into fluid form, fed into the Blender for Diluted Fuel production, and the Empty Canisters are recycled back to the packaging station. This loop eliminates the need to pipeline Heavy Oil Residue over long distances — you can package it at the oil field and transport the solid packaged form anywhere.
Heavy Oil Residue + Empty Canister → Refinery (Packaged HOR)
→ Packaged Heavy Oil Residue (conveyor transport)
→ Refinery (Unpackaged) → Heavy Oil Residue (fluid) + Empty Canister
HOR (fluid) + Water → Blender (Diluted Fuel) → Fuel
Empty Canister → Recycler → back to Packaging Refinery
Comparison with Turbo Fuel
Turbo Fuel is another late-game fuel option that uses Compacted Coal + Fuel in a Refinery to produce a denser fuel source (1.5x energy density per unit). For vehicle fuel and Jetpack usage, Turbo Fuel is superior because of its compactness — you carry less weight for the same range. However, for Fuel Generator power production, Diluted Fuel is generally preferred because: (1) it doesn't require Compacted Coal (saving Sulfur and Coal), (2) it produces more total fuel volume, and (3) the Blender is more power-efficient than additional Refinery steps. Many pioneers use both: Diluted Fuel for their power grid and a separate Turbo Fuel line for vehicles.
3 Hard Drive Acquisition
The Diluted Fuel recipe comes from the Tier 7 alternate recipe pool, which is only accessible from Crash Sites in the most remote and dangerous biomes on the map. The Red Bamboo Fields, the eastern Swamp, and the northernmost reaches of the Spire Coast are the primary hunting grounds. These areas require significant preparation — advanced weapons, substantial healing supplies, and ideally a train network or hypertube system for transportation.

Tier 7 Recipe Pool
The Tier 7 alternate recipe pool is the pinnacle of recipe unlocks. Every recipe here is endgame-defining. Other recipes in this pool include: Diluted Fuel, Turbo Heavy Fuel, Fused Modular Frame (alternate), Aluminum-related alternates, and several advanced electronic component recipes. The pool is small — typically 8-10 recipes — meaning your odds of getting Diluted Fuel on any given Hard Drive are approximately 10-15%. Because every recipe is excellent, many pioneers simply collect all Tier 7 Hard Drives they can find, unlocking the entire pool over time.
A Tier 7 Hard Drive hunt is not something you do on a whim. Before departing: (1) Build a hypertube or train line as close to the target biome as possible. (2) Stock 30+ healing items and full ammunition for your best weapon. (3) Bring 500+ Concrete for emergency foundation building. (4) Pack extra Fuel Canisters for your Jetpack. (5) Set up a temporary base camp with a crafting bench and storage near the biome entrance. (6) Save your game. Twice. To different slots.

MAM Research Requirements
The MAM is required for all Hard Drive research. At Tier 7, you've had the MAM for a very long time and it should be well-integrated into your base. Research time for Tier 7 Hard Drives is 30 minutes per drive — the longest in the game. This means you should collect multiple Hard Drives in a single expedition and queue them up for research, rather than making repeated trips.
↓ Build Blender (costs: 50 Alclad Aluminum Sheets + 25 Motors + 10 Heavy Modular Frames)
↓ Establish Heavy Oil Residue production line
↓ Set up Water extraction infrastructure
↓ Plan Tier 7 Hard Drive expedition (see locations above)
↓ Collect 2-4 Hard Drives in single trip → Queue in MAM
↓ Select Diluted Fuel from options (or take others and hunt again)

Tier Requirements
Diluted Fuel requires the Blender building (Tier 7) and the Heavy Oil Residue alternate recipe (Tier 5-6). Make sure you've already unlocked Heavy Oil Residue before hunting for Diluted Fuel — otherwise you won't be able to use the recipe even if you find it. The Heavy Oil Residue recipe is from the same Tier 5-6 pool as Heavy Encased Frame and Recycled Plastic, so you may have already obtained it during earlier Hard Drive hunts.
5 Gotcha Tips
Diluted Fuel requires 100 Water per minute per Blender — twice as much water as Heavy Oil Residue input. A single Mk.1 pipeline (300 fluid/min) can supply up to 3 Blenders, but you'll likely want Mk.2 pipelines (600 fluid/min) for larger setups. The Water Extractor placement matters: ideally, build your Diluted Fuel production near a water source (river, lake, or coastline) to minimize pipeline length. If you must transport water long distances, consider packaging it at the source and using conveyors instead — belts don't have headlift limitations.
Fluid pipelines in Satisfactory have a headlift limit of 10 meters before needing a Pipeline Pump. Water extractors already provide 10m of headlift, but if your Blender setup is elevated (which it often is, for gravity-fed fuel delivery to generators), you'll need pumps at regular intervals. Plan your vertical layout carefully — every 10m of elevation requires one pump at 4 MW. A common mistake is building a beautiful Diluted Fuel setup and then discovering your water can't reach the Blenders because you forgot headlift calculations.
Each Fuel Generator consumes 12 Fuel per minute and produces 150 MW. With Diluted Fuel producing 100 Fuel per minute per Blender, a single Blender can theoretically fuel 8.33 generators for 1,250 MW. In practice, plan for 8 generators per Blender (96 Fuel/min) to leave a small buffer. A Pure Oil node producing 240 Crude Oil per minute can feed a chain that produces approximately 640 Fuel per minute — enough for 53 Fuel Generators producing 7,950 MW. That's nearly 8 GW from a single oil node, which is enough to power an enormous late-game factory.
When you convert Crude Oil to Heavy Oil Residue using the alternate recipe, you get Plastic as a byproduct (20 Plastic per 30 Crude Oil at the Refinery). This is 'free' Plastic, but it can back up your Refinery if you don't have a destination for it. Make sure to belt the Plastic away to storage or directly to your Plastic-consuming production lines (Circuit Boards, Computers, etc.). If the Plastic output backs up, the Refinery stops producing Heavy Oil Residue, which starves your Diluted Fuel production. Always provide an overflow sink (Awesome Sink) for byproducts you can't immediately use.
The Blender consumes 30 MW base power. At 100% clock speed producing 100 Fuel/min, the power cost per fuel unit is 0.3 MW/Fuel. At 200% overclock, power consumption jumps to ~75 MW (following the exponential curve) while producing 200 Fuel/min — that's 0.375 MW/Fuel. Overclocking Blenders for Diluted Fuel is LESS power-efficient per unit of output. For maximum power efficiency, run Blenders at 100%. Only overclock if you're space-constrained and can't fit more Blenders. The same principle applies to Refineries processing Heavy Oil Residue.
