1 Why This Recipe Matters
The Pure Ingot recipes represent the absolute pinnacle of ore processing efficiency in Satisfactory. By adding Water to your ore in a Refinery, you achieve a doubling of ingot output compared to standard smelting. This is not a modest improvement — it is a fundamental transformation of your factory's resource economy. Every single ingot you produce via the Pure method costs half the ore, meaning your finite node deposits last twice as long and your miners extract double the value.
Production Efficiency Gain
The math behind Pure Ingots is staggering. A standard Smelter converts 30 Iron Ore into 30 Iron Ingots per minute — a 1:1 ratio. The Pure Iron Ingot recipe in a Refinery converts 7 Iron Ore AND 10 Water into 13 Iron Ingots per minute. Scale that up: to produce 60 Iron Ingots per minute, the Smelter needs 60 Iron Ore, while the Refinery needs only approximately 32 Iron Ore and 46 Water. The ore savings are nearly 50%, and the Water is essentially free if you have a water extractor nearby.
This efficiency compounds across your entire factory. Every product downstream of ingots — Iron Plates, Iron Rods, Screws, Reinforced Iron Plates, Modular Frames, Rotors, Stators, Motors — benefits from the reduced ore demand. When you multiply this across three ore types (Iron, Copper, and Caterium), the total resource savings can free up entire nodes to be redirected toward other production lines. A factory running Pure Ingots effectively has twice the raw material capacity of one using standard smelting.
When to Unlock
Pure Ingots become available at Tier 5, which requires you to have completed the Oil Processing milestone. This is a significant gate — you need Refineries unlocked and operational before you can even consider using these recipes. The earliest you can realistically obtain and use Pure Ingots is after establishing your first oil pipeline and building your initial Refinery setup for Plastic and Rubber production.
However, Tier 5 is when resource demands begin to escalate dramatically. Phase 3 of the Space Elevator requires 2,500 Modular Frames and 500 Motors. Phase 4 demands 4,000 Smart Plating and 1,500 Automated Wiring. These quantities are nearly impossible to sustain with standard smelting unless you have tapped every node on the map. Pure Ingots arrive at exactly the right moment — when your resource needs outpace your supply, and doubling your effective ore output becomes not just convenient but essential.
The Water Requirement
The trade-off for Pure Ingots is Water. Each Refinery needs a Water Extractor feeding into it, which adds complexity to your factory layout. Water Extractors must be placed on water surfaces and require 20 MW of power each. A single Water Extractor produces 120 Water per minute, enough to supply approximately 2.6 Pure Iron Ingot Refineries. This means your ore processing lines now need to be built near water sources, or you need to pipeline water across long distances. The logistical overhead is real, but the 2x ore efficiency makes it worthwhile for every major production hub.

Production Tree
60 Iron Ore → Smelter → 60 Iron Ingot
[PURE IRON INGOT — ALTERNATE]
32 Iron Ore → Refinery
46 Water → Refinery → 60 Iron Ingot/min
[WATER SUPPLY CHAIN]
Water Extractor (20 MW) → 120 Water/min
120 Water/min → Supplies ~2.6 Pure Ingot Refineries
120 Water/min → Produces ~33 Pure Ingots/min total
Scaling to 120 Ingots Per Minute
To produce 120 Pure Iron Ingots per minute, you need approximately 9.2 Refineries (running at 100%), consuming 64 Iron Ore and 92 Water per minute. The Water requirement demands one Water Extractor running at 77% capacity, or simply one full extractor for headroom. By comparison, producing 120 Iron Ingots with standard Smelters requires 120 Iron Ore per minute and 4 Smelters. The Pure method saves you 56 Iron Ore per minute — that's almost a full Pure node worth of resources freed up for other uses.
Comparison with Other Alternate Recipes
Copper Alloy Ingot recipe becomes available, which combines Copper Ore and Iron Ore in a Foundry to produce Copper Ingots at roughly 3x the standard rate. For Caterium, there is no intermediate alternate between the default Smelter recipe and Pure Caterium Ingot at Tier 5." data-zh="纯净锭块并不是唯一的锭块生产替代配方。在T3阶段,铜合金锭配方可用,它在熔炉中将铜矿和铁矿结合产生约3倍于标准率的铜锭块。对于锣矿,除了默认熔炼炉配方和T5的纯净锣矿配方外,没有中间的替代配方。">Pure Ingots is not the only alternate recipe for ingot production. At Tier 3, the Copper Alloy Ingot recipe becomes available, which combines Copper Ore and Iron Ore in a Foundry to produce Copper Ingots at roughly 3x the standard rate. For Caterium, there is no intermediate alternate between the default Smelter recipe and Pure Caterium Ingot at Tier 5.
The key difference is that Pure Ingots applies to THREE ore types simultaneously, while Copper Alloy only handles Copper. Additionally, Pure Ingots uses Water — a renewable, infinite resource — while Copper Alloy consumes Iron Ore, which may be needed elsewhere. Many late-game factories use a hybrid approach: Pure Copper Ingots for copper-intensive production, Copper Alloy Ingots when Iron is abundant, and Pure Iron/Caterium Ingots for everything else. The best pioneers adapt their strategy to their node's purity and location.
3 Hard Drive Acquisition
The three Pure Ingot recipes (Pure Iron Ingot, Pure Copper Ingot, Pure Caterium Ingot) are obtained by researching Hard Drives in the MAM. Hard Drives are physical items found at Crash Sites scattered across the map. Each Crash Site contains exactly one Hard Drive, and each Hard Drive unlocks one alternate recipe from a randomized pool. There are 118 Crash Sites in total on the Satisfactory map. The Pure Ingot recipes appear in the Tier 5-6 recipe pool.

Recipe Pool Information
The Pure Ingot recipes are part of the Tier 5-6 alternate recipe pool. When you research a Hard Drive from a Crash Site in these biomes, the MAM will present you with three random recipes from the pool. The Tier 5-6 pool includes: Pure Iron Ingot, Pure Copper Ingot, Pure Caterium Ingot, Polyester Fabric, Radio Control Unit, Turbo Motor, and numerous other high-tier recipes. Because the selection is random, you are not guaranteed to see a specific Pure Ingot recipe on any given Hard Drive.
If you don't see a Pure Ingot recipe in your first three options, do NOT panic. You can either: (1) Save before researching, reload if you don't get it, or (2) Gather more Hard Drives from other Crash Sites to increase your chances. The recipe pool shrinks as you unlock recipes, so your odds improve with each Hard Drive you research. With 25+ recipes in the Tier 5-6 pool, it may take 5-10 Hard Drives to get all three Pure Ingot recipes.
4 Unlock Strategy
MAM Research Requirements
Before you can research Hard Drives for Pure Ingot recipes, you need to have the MAM built and have reached Tier 5 in the HUB upgrade tree. Here's the complete unlock path:
↓ HUB Tier 5: Unlock Oil Processing + Refinery
↓ Build Refinery (requires motors, steel pipes, cables)
↓ Establish Oil Production (Plastic + Rubber)
↓ Research Hard Drive tab in MAM
↓ Insert Hard Drive → Wait 10 minutes → Select Pure Ingot from 3 options
Prerequisites Checklist
| Requirement | How to Obtain | Estimated Time |
|---|---|---|
| HUB Tier 5 | Deliver Phase 2 Space Elevator payload | 10-20 hours |
| Refinery Building | Unlocked at Tier 5 Oil Processing | Immediate after Tier 5 |
| Oil Production Running | Build Oil Extractor on oil node + pipeline to Refinery | 2-4 hours |
| Water Extractor | Unlocked at Tier 3 Coal Power | Already available by Tier 5 |
| Hard Drive from Tier 5+ Biome | Loot from Crash Sites in Northern Forest, Desert, or later biomes | 1-3 hours per drive |
Tier Requirements
Pure Ingot recipes require Tier 5 specifically because they need the Refinery building, which is unlocked through the Oil Processing milestone. The Refinery is a Tier 5 exclusive building that cannot be accessed earlier. Additionally, the water infrastructure needed to supply Pure Ingot Refineries assumes you have already built Water Extractors for coal power (Tier 3), so the water supply chain should already be familiar.
Recommended Unlock Order
For maximum efficiency at Tier 5 and beyond, we recommend the following unlock order:
- Pure Iron Ingot — Iron is your most consumed resource; doubling its efficiency impacts everything
- Pure Copper Ingot — Copper demand explodes at Tier 5-6 with Wire, Cable, and Circuit Boards
- Pure Caterium Ingot — Caterium is rare; Pure processing makes every node count double
- Diluted Fuel — Converts Fuel to Packaged Fuel at 2x efficiency using Water
- Recycled Plastic/Rubber — Converts fuel byproducts back into Plastic and Rubber
5 Gotcha Tips
Pure Ingots require both ore AND water piped into the same Refinery. This means every Pure Ingot production line needs a water pipeline running alongside your ore conveyor belts. Plan your factory layout with water infrastructure in mind from the start. A common mistake is building your smelting area far from water, then realizing you need to run kilometer-long pipelines. Build near lakes or oceans whenever possible.
A Refinery draws 30 MW of power — that's 7.5x more than a Smelter (4 MW). When you transition from Smelters to Refineries for Pure Ingots, your power grid will feel the strain. A single Pure Iron Ingot line producing 60 ingots per minute needs 2 Refineries, drawing 60 MW total. The equivalent Smelter line draws only 8 MW. Factor in the Water Extractor (20 MW) and you're looking at 80 MW versus 8 MW. The ore savings are worth it, but upgrade your power grid FIRST.
Water Extractors have a maximum head lift of 10 meters. If your Refineries are elevated above the water source, you'll need Pipeline Pumps to push the water uphill. Each pump adds 4 MW of power draw. For optimal efficiency, place your Refineries at or below water level, or build your Water Extractors on elevated foundations so gravity helps the flow. A vertical water pipeline with multiple pumps can add 20+ MW to your power budget.
Unlike some other Refinery recipes (such as Heavy Oil Residue or Polymer Resin), Pure Ingot recipes produce NO byproducts. The output is clean ingots only. This is both a blessing and a curse — you don't need to deal with waste fluids or byproduct routing, but you also can't chain the byproducts into other production lines. The simplicity makes Pure Ingots ideal for dedicated smelting outposts.
The recipe you get from a Hard Drive is determined when you INSERT it into the MAM, not when you pick it up. Save your game before inserting any Hard Drive from Tier 5-6 biomes. If you don't see the Pure Ingot recipe you want among the three options, reload and try again. With 25+ recipes in the pool, save scumming is the most time-efficient way to target specific Pure Ingot recipes.
